Dyson Filters

Your Dyson vacuum is able to function efficiently in part due to the use of filters in the vacuum. Filtration is a crucial part to maintaining your vacuum’s performance and suction. A clogged or dirty filter hampers the vacuum cleaner’s ability to provide proper suction and can place added stress on the vacuum motor. Every Dyson upright and canister vacuum utilizes at least one filter and in some cases two filters.

There are two types of filters your vacuum may utilize. A pre-motor filter is responsible for filtering air sucked in by your vacuum that may contain dust and other minute particles. This filter is cleaning the air before it passes through the motor, thus maintaining and extending the life of the motor. These filters are often washable and should be thoroughly cleaned every 3 to 6 months depending on the amount of use your vacuum assumes. After washing the filter, allow at least 24 hours for the filter to dry completely before placing it back in the vacuum. If the filter is showing wear, it is time to purchase a new pre-motor filter. This is typically the case after 2 or 3 years of use.

A second filter found on most Dyson canister and upright vacuums is the Dyson HEPA filter. The HEPA filter is responsible for filtering air before it leaves the vacuum as this is the final stage of cleaning performed by your Dyson. HEPA filters cannot be washed, they can only be replaced. To maintain the performance of your Dyson HEPA filter you should replace it every year.
