Upright vacuum cleaners are the most popular vacuum cleaner style in the US. This could be because upright vacuum cleaners are easy to store and easy to use.

Upright vacuums offer a cleaner that has the powerhead directly connected to the vacuum and typically cannot be swapped out with an alternate cleaning head. Sometimes these cleaner heads offer variable height adjustment for different floor styles, either manual or automatic. Bagless upright vacuum cleaners are quite popular, however, bagged vacuum models are also available and encouraged for homes needing top notch filtration and dirt containment like those with allergies or asthma.

Upright vacuum cleaners come in many types, shapes, and sizes from many different brands. When shopping for an upright vacuum cleaner you’ll need to decide on several differing factors. Your specific flooring type will play a role in the model you end up purchasing. For example, if you have solid or hard flooring you will want an upright vacuum that has the option to turn the brushbar off and offer straight-suction. If you have pets or allergies, you’ll want to look into uprights that have powerful motors, high efficiency or HEPA filtration, and a bagged style would be best.

An additional item to consider in regards to upright vacuums is that they are typically heavier than canister vacuums. When operating an upright the entire weight of the vacuum will need to be pushed around during operation, as opposed to just a hose, wand, and floor tool when using a canister. However, more and more lightweight upright vacuum cleaners hit the market every day, with SEBO and Dyson offering some of the lightest in recent years.

If you are looking for an upright for an office or business, we suggest you look at a commercial vacuum cleaner. Commercial vacuums are designed and intended for more frequent use in larger areas. However, keep in mind that commercial vacuums typically have a shorter warranty because the expectation is that they are used much more. Although, residential vacuum cleaner warranties are generally not honored if the vacuum is used in a commercial setting.
